Retailers are finding more challenges with self-checkout stations. A recent LendingTree survey found approximately 20% of consumers who used self-checkout reported accidentally leaving a store with an unpaid item, while 15% acknowledged intentionally taking an item without paying for it. Retailers have been pulling back on their self-checkout stations as theft has been a noticeable problem, whether that means not paying at all or scanning only their lowest priced item. Some are deciding to completely close this option for shoppers while other stores are limiting the number of items that can be checked out at a time. This is slightly unexpected as retailers were actively adding self-checkout options to improve the shopping experience for young customers earlier this year. (WSJ)
