New research finds a positive link between literacy skills and family screen time. The significance of screen time lies in the types of relationships children build while using their tech devices, particularly in relation to their use of social media. While most parents are concerned about screen time, the study shows watching screens together with children can have positive effects on their literacy and language development. Parents who engage in conversations about the content their children are watching can enhance their understanding and critical thinking skills. Additionally, watching screens together provides an opportunity for parents to monitor their child’s emotional responses and imagination sparked by the characters on screen. YPulse data shows eight in 10 young parents agree that watching TV together is a way to spend time with their children—and it can evidently be educational, too. (Psychology Today)
