Dozens of U.S. shopping malls are putting curfews in place. As many teenagers go alone or with friends to shopping malls for their first taste of independence, they’re being faced with more and more signs that the mall does not want them there. Anti-teen policies, including curfews and mandatory parent pick-ups, are going into effect as malls describe “an increase in disruptive behavior that violates the center’s code of conduct by a small minority of younger visitors.” This is an ironic time for malls to be making headlines about being too rowdy, while in the past few years COVID-19 and bankruptcy has strongly impacted their decline in the news. YPulse’s Shopping and Retail report data shows teens are actually the most likely of 13-39-year-olds to prefer shopping in person, so these malls are alienating a core consumer base. (Plus, they’re losing the third space competition). (The Guardian)
