Millennials feel like they have no need for X (Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram in the current age of social media. Many “first gen social media users” feel like the golden age of internet communication has passed its peak. As Twitter was assumed by Elon Musk and Meta merged Instagram and Facebook, Millennials feel disconnected to the apps they first got to know—in response, some are cutting back or letting go of their accounts altogether. Most are upset about social media no longer being a place where they keep up with friends and instead one where celebrities and influencers are forced onto their feeds. Ultimately, the rules of social media have vastly changed and apps like TikTok exemplify “what the next phase of social media will be centered around: a future focused on visual immersion, fueled by AI, location-based software, and augmented reality.” However, YPulse data shows 23-39-year-old Millennials aren’t completely unwilling to keep up—more than half are on TikTok and more are on other Gen Z fave platforms, too.
