Michaels just unveiled MakerPlace, an online marketplace designed to connect shoppers with sellers of handmade goods and offer artist-led classes. This launch comes after Michaels introduced a third-party marketplace for craft supplies in February, and both will operate concurrently. The Etsy-like platform has already gotten hundreds of thousands of product listings, which are free for sellers—a choice aiming to lower barriers for artists and help them earn more. MakerPlace offers two membership tiers, basic and professional, with varying referral fees. The move is set to tackle the challenges faced by artists in the online marketplace and foster their creativity. YPulse data shows Etsy is a top 10 retail app young consumers use, indicating they’re interested in handmade goods or small business sellers, so this platform has the potential to be successful amongst young people as well.
