After weeks of backlash, Scholastic says it will no longer separate diverse stories for school book fairs. Last month, the company said it was putting most book titles dealing with race, gender, and sexuality into their own collection, “allowing schools to decide whether to order it, as they would with any display.” While Scholastic said the change was to help schools through some of the recent book bans, authors and educators were quick to argue that the company is just caving to the censorship. And after Scholastic tried to further defend its decision, racial justice and free speech advocacy groups stepped in. Scholastic’s most recent statement rescinded the book separation initiatives and apologized—steps young people say are necessary when a brand makes a mistake. (npr)
