Black, female, Gen Z college students are taking the matter of beauty access into their own hands. A 2022 McKinsey study showed Black consumers have to travel farther on average than White consumers to find specialty beauty stores. On college campuses, especially Predominantly White Institutions, Black students found they had even more trouble getting the products and services that suit their needs, specifically nail and hair products, and protective hair styling. So, several young Black women started their own companies to distribute beauty products to college campuses. Jaida Day (22-years-old), Kyla Goodman (18-years-old), and Aniyah Marie (19-years-old) have all begun their own businesses to meet this need. YPulse data shows 53% of young Black people say they’re more likely to buy a personal care or beauty product labeled BIPOC-owned. (Blavity)
