Cigarettes are making a cultural comeback. With smoking dying down in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s (youth smoking rates dropped from 23% in 2000 to 2.3% in 2021), it appeared that the days of cigarettes were a thing of the past—but now, nicotine is making its way back into pop culture. Modern TV shows like The Idol, Stranger Things, and American Horror Story depict their main characters smoking and even cigarette-like lipsticks influenced by popular singer Lana Del Rey have been going viral on TikTok, and celebrities are posting pictures online of them smoking. With media pushing smoking to appear “cool” again, and the nicotine industry targeting teens with vape products, it’s almost inevitable that this trend is making a comeback amongst young consumers.
