There is a growing sentiment from health and wellness influencers on TikTok that sunscreen is more harmful than getting sunburnt. Professionals have long advised applying SPF when exposed to the sun’s UV rays in order to avoid the pesky sunburn that everyone has experienced at some point or another. But some TikTok influencers are recently warning their viewers of the “toxic ingredients” that they allege seep into the bloodstream and telling them to forego SPF because our ancestors hunted and gathered all day in the sun. Doctors are defending the use of sun protection still—one dermatologist from the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York says that while the sun has benefits, “all skin types should wear sunscreen and everyone should avoid jumping on these trends,” to avoid consequences such as melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.
