New data shows LGBTQ+ youth of color view TikTok as the safest online space. A research brief from the nonprofit The Trevor Project looked into which social media platforms were deemed the safest and most dangerous for young LGBTQ+ users of color. TikTok ranked number one in terms of “online comfort and safety,” with 53% of respondents choosing it, while Discord, Instagram, and YouTube ranked next in line. The social media spaces where LGBTQ+ people feel at ease are crucial for their mental wellbeing, with the nonprofit saying “Overall, LGBTQ young people who reported feeling safe and understood in at least one online space had 20 percent lower odds of attempting suicide in the past year.” (Mashable)
