The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is making moves to prohibit kids from being monetized online. The FTC is proposing to tighten its 2020 order against Meta, which it alleges has repeatedly violated privacy rules, as well as the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act Rule. There are claims that the company “misrepresented that parents could control whom their children communicated with through its Messenger Kids product.” The proposed restrictions include preventing Meta from monetizing data from anyone under the age of 18-years-old, launching new products or services without the independent assessor confirming their compliance with privacy restrictions, expanding limitations on facial recognition, requiring “disclosure and affirmative consent,” and strengthening requirements relating to privacy review, data inventory, and access controls.
