Nonprofit organization iUrban Teen STEM Program is working to provide educational opportunities for young people of color. The organization first launched back in 2013, and over the last decade it’s been mentoring and exposing teens and young adults of color to career opportunities in STEM. They stand out from other programs by focusing not only on science and engineering, but manufacturing as well. And the org introduces students to designing and creating products while making sustainability main component. The group has been expanding and now has chapters in Washington, Oregon, California, and Texas. While YPulse’s Education report data shows that less than 15% of young POC say they are interested in pursuing engineering and math in college, we know they highly value sustainability efforts: 41% of young POC think their generation is the most responsible for solving climate change compared to 31% of White / non-Hispanic young people.
