Swarm’s co-creator Janine Nabers created the Black female anti-hero she always wanted to see on screen. Nabers recognized that “We see so many white men and women behaving badly on TV, but we still have empathy for them” and with Prime Video’s Swarm, she “wanted to focus on creating that for us, for the Black community within this Black cultural lens.” Swarm’s main character Dre is an unhinged fan obsessed with a pop-star reminiscent of Beyoncé on the surface, but she’s also the first Black female character most have seen with a Sopranos-like energy on screen. YPulse data shows 71% of Black Gen Z and Millennials say they wish they saw more people of their race in TV shows / movies and overall, young POC are +7pts more likely to agree with the statement: “entertainment media can do a better job of representing minority groups” than White / non-Hispanic youth.
