Nourie’s plant-based hair extensions are changing the hair industry for Black women. Synthetic braiding hair is typically made out of faux extensions that are usually coated in chemicals and can irritate the scalp. After too many bad experiences with synthetic hair, Osahon Ojeaga developed Nourie, a hair extension brand that uses fibrous plants like coconut to craft the strands. Nourie’s compostable, plant-derived braiding hair (infused with ginseng root extract and rosemary) are unlike anything else on the market. YPulse’s Sustainability report data shows young people of color are less likely to say they live a sustainable lifestyle than their White/non-Hispanic peers, but that could be in part because they don’t have access to as many eco-friendly products, at least when it comes to beauty and personal care.
