Some of R. L. Stine’s Goosebumps books are being reworked to fix outdated language. Various titles from his iconic anthology have been “re-released as sanitized e-books by Scholastic,” with language tweaks that replace some terms that might be considered offensive today. For example, “crazy” is changed to “silly” and “plump” to “cheerful.” While the updates are igniting controversy and upsetting some regarding “woke culture,” Scholastic is ultimately making the edits with the intent of “improv[ing] the texts via more sensitive language around weight, ethnicity, mental health, and other evolving topics.” While it was originally said R. L. Stine agreed to the changes, in a statement this week, he announced that Scholastic made the changes without his approval. (Literary Hub, The Times)
