Students are learning about Black history in the metaverse. In order to promote Black history education among young people, educators are using virtual reality to create immersive and interactive moments in time. Recently, Morehouse College launched its first Black history course in the metaverse, “virtually taking students on a slave ship, and to the Civil War and World War I battlegrounds where Black soldiers fought.” These experiences are offering students a unique way to see the past and witness historical moments like Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech “in person.” While YPulse’s Metaverse trend report shows young people are most interested in gaming in virtual spaces, 74% of BIPOC youth have gone to school or class in the metaverse or are interested in doing so.
