Gen Z and Millennials have different ideas about what it meant to be the perfect parent.

Feb 16 2023

Gen Z and Millennials have different ideas about what it meant to be the perfect parent. YPulse data shows 87% of Millennial parents agree there is “no such thing as a perfect parent”—but that doesn’t mean they aren’t trying their hardest to get close, and a recent survey by What to Expect shows eight in 10 new and expectant moms still feel it’s important to be perfect. Moms from 18-26-years-old especially feel that pressure, rating several parenting ideals as more important than 27-41-year-old moms do, including “Prioritizing my family over myself,” “Keeping kids busy with lots of activities,” and “Being open to child(ren) exploring their own identity.” And even though 27-41-year-old Millennial moms show more confidence in their parenting skills, they feel more pressure to be perfect in things like “Modeling a strong work ethic” and “Having a successful partnership/marriage.” One psychologist says social media is the culprit of the high pressure on young moms, because everything they do is discussed, critiqued, and debated. YPulse data shows nearly all of Millennial moms are social media users, and they’re likely seeing the mass amounts of content that urge them to parent better and in new ways, which can make them feel like there’s always more to be done.
