TikTok users may soon find some creators are putting paywalls on their video content. Gen Z’s favorite social platform has surged in growth since 2019, but as its user base plateaued in the U.S. recently, the app is coming up with new ways to boost usage. TikTok is in the process of adding paywalls where, per their report, “viewers would pay $1 — or some other fee chosen by the creator” to view content. And to further entice creators, the app is planning on revamping their Creator Fund by “raising the requirements for being eligible to participate in the fund to 100,000 followers and giving payouts to users who make longer videos.” YPulse’s TV and Entertainment report data shows 24% of Gen Z and Millennials currently pay for access to content from an online celebrity (e.g. OnlyFans, Patreon, IG subscriptions, etc.), so they may find dedicated viewers are in fact willing to pay for their favorite creators’ videos.
