Parents are accusing Snapchat of enabling drug dealers after losing their children to overdose.

Feb 09 2023

Parents are accusing Snapchat of enabling drug dealers after losing their children to overdose. More than 50 families are taking legal action against the social media app in lawsuits claiming the app “ignored the harms its product was causing.” While Snapchat has long dealt with privacy and child safety issues, a growing number of parents are putting blame on the app for drug related incidents. A social media lawyer representing some of the families who have lost their children to overdoses says that while a number of social media apps have drug-related activity within their platforms, Snapchat is particularly popular for drug dealers because of the ability have messages disappear and see users’ locations on Snap Maps. To address this, Snapchat has been working with law enforcement and has redirected language that insinuates the use of drugs. In October, they even launched a campaign that warned about the danger of pills and fentanyl. Eighty-five percent of parents tell YPulse they’re worried about the future world their children will live in. (NBC News)
