Once again, a trending TikTok beauty aesthetic is excluding women of color.

Jan 31 2023

Once again, a trending TikTok beauty aesthetic is excluding women of color. After backlash around #CleanGirl called it out for appropriating the look from BIPOC women, the (very similar looking) #VanillaGirl trend quickly took its place, racking up 471.9M views on the app so far. The look features dewy makeup, gold jewelry, matching sets, and (going by the top videos) blonde hair and white skin. As beauty influencer Alice x T observes, “It’s just another version [of #cleangirl] but with even less women of color.” While the vanilla girl look doesn’t appropriate from other cultures as others have, it’s nearly impossible to find BIPOC women in the content—unless one specifically includes “WOC” in the search. When it comes to trending TikTok aesthetics, “One common, underlying theme always seems to be the lack of diversity in skin tone,” prompting the question: “Where are all the people of color?” (Refinery29)
