TikTok is expanding their “state controlled media” labels in more than 40 countries. Following the pilot program TikTok initiated last year when Russia invaded Ukraine, the app is going to increase the labels that warn users when videos are “published by entities whose ‘editorial output or decision-making process’ is subject to influence by a government.” In a press release this week, TikTok said they want to ensure users receive “accurate, transparent, and actionable context when they engage with content from media accounts that may present the viewpoint of a government.” The move is especially important for young Gen Z viewers who are visiting the app daily. YPulse’s News Consumption and Trust report shows that social media is the top place Gen Z and Millennials get news and up-to-date information, and nearly half (48%) of Gen Z who get their news on social media get it through TikTok.
