Will metaverse users be able to touch and smell things in virtual worlds this year? During the CES tech gathering in Vegas, the metaverse took center stage. Taiwanese tech giant HTC and other tech companies are aiming to compete with Meta with the release of new “sensory technologies that can help users feel — and even smell — in a virtual environment.” Among them, OVR Technology revealed a new “headset containing a cartridge with eight primary aromas that can be combined to create different scents” that’s scheduled to be released this year. But some of the immersive tech is far from reality (let alone from reaching store shelves) and some were big letdowns and impressed no one. YPulse’s Tech / Device Usage report data shows only 9% of Gen Z and Millennials own a virtual reality headset and according to NPD Group, “sales of VR headsets, which found popular use in gaming, declined by 2% last year,” putting a damper on companies betting big on the metaverse.
