New research showing diabetes rates may surge for young people in the U.S. is breaking the internet. According to new data from the CDC, “the number of people under age 20 with type 2 diabetes in the [U.S.] may increase nearly 675% by 2060 if trends continue.” They’ve also predicted an “increase of up to 65% in young people with type 1 diabetes” if rates from the past several years continue. Researchers cite record numbers of childhood obesity and the presence of diabetes in young adults who are childbearing age. The CDC also warned that “young people who are Black, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander and Native American/Alaska Native are likely to have a higher burden of type 2 diabetes than White people.” YPulse research shows Gen Z and Millennials aren’t turning to experts for wellness advice, so reaching them on social media for anything health and wellness related is a must.
