As TikTok’s growth cools, more social features are being added to the app. TikTok has grown to be Gen Z’s favorite social platform thanks to its distinct ability to connect people while also providing addictive entertainment. Other popular social apps have tried to keep up with copycat video features, but now the trending app seems to be reaching a plateau and the tables have turned. Over the last several months, TikTok has been adding more social components that are taking after trending apps, like their BeReal-esque TikTok Now, and they “recently started interrupting the flow of videos in the most commonly used part of the app—the For You page—by badgering users to follow accounts that recently followed them.” TikTok’s intent is to keep users engaged, but in doing so, their uniqueness has the potential to lessen over time.
