Gen Z investors are growing more interested in alternative investments—“alts” as they call them. Despite the crypto crash in May, young people are still investing, as they lose faith in the traditional stock market (not unwarranted “given that the S&P 500 is down around 15% year-to-date”). With so many other emerging investment options—even beyond cryptocurrencies—Gen Z is getting risky with “alts.” According to a survey by communication consultancy firm Lansons, “less than 10% of Americans overall have invested in alternative assets, 30% of Gen Z and 25% of [M]illennials either invest in alternative assets or have knowledge of platforms that allow them to.” Young people who feel they’re getting in early on “alt” investments like wine, gold, real estate, artwork, and even farmland believe that they present a greater return than traditional stocks.
