The U.S.’s childcare system is “broken” and simply no longer working for young families. According to the Treasury Department, “child care is unaffordable for more than 60 percent of families who need it” and some families are spending $25K a year for one kid alone. In many parts of the country, parents are spending more on day care then they are on in-state college tuition or their rent. What’s worse is that since the pandemic, day care facilities are being hit by staffing shortages, and full-blown closures, making it even harder for parents being urged back to work. This is forcing many Millennial women in particular to lose their jobs and “there are still 808,000 fewer women in the labor force than February 2020.” YPulse data shows that more Millennial moms (42%) are staying home with their children rather than bringing them to day care (16%).
