Google is trying to compete with TikTok after purchasing an artificial intelligence startup. Alter, previously known as Fecemoji, is a service that offers developers a platform to create and add avatars to other apps and games. Google recently acquired the company for $100M, with (we can assume) the intent to compete with Gen Z’s favorite app. While it’s unknown how exactly they plan on competing with them, the new AI avatar tech may be used for Google’s YouTube Shorts, their own short form video format that’s growing super popular among young users. After rolling out last summer, “Google announced this past June that the platform had 1.5 billion active users.” YPulse research shows that YouTube and TikTok are neck and neck for Gen Z video consumption.
