Speaking of cans, consumers in the U.K. are increasingly turning to canned meat and fish amid the cost of living crisis.

Oct 26 2022

Speaking of cans, consumers in the U.K. are increasingly turning to canned meat and fish amid the cost of living crisis. High-end supermarket chain Waitrose just revealed an interesting stat: consumers are increasingly turning to canned food in their quest to save the pennies. And of all canned products, spam and fish heads are getting the most interest, with sales for both increasing by a third. The supermarket chain also found that 72% of their surveyed customers are “more mindful” when shopping now—meaning looking for cheaper products, and deals. Inflation is currently at a historic 40-year high in the U.K. and is hitting young consumers really hard. The cost of living crisis is deepening everywhere in Western Europe, and experts are wondering if it will be the equivalent of 9/11 for Gen Alpha. This is impacting young Europeans’ shopping plans, and YPulse data shows that 63% of them agree with the statement “Because of the economy, I’m going to ask for more essentials as gifts this year.” (Retail Gazette)
