UNICEF’s classic trick-or-treat charity drive is getting a digital makeover this year. While Millennials may remember carrying UNICEF’s orange box door-to-door to collect donations for kids in need, 2022’s collections will happen via QR codes: trick-or-treaters will carry QR-coded items such as canister wrappers and color-in posters. Neighbors can then scan the codes and be connected to a portal that allows them to donate. The digital upgrade also means that trick-or-treating is not required for participation, meaning those that have aged out of the activity can still participate. With 92% of Gen Z and Millennials saying they plan to celebrate Halloween this year, UNICEF has a good chance of getting these cause-driven gens involved. Meanwhile, with Halloween becoming a social media event that’s all about aesthetics for young consumers, the organization’s spooky QR code fits into their digital-first approach to the holiday.
