Gen Z TikTokers are vocalizing how the “quiet quitting” trend is perpetuating misconceptions about their generation.

Oct 08 2022

Gen Z TikTokers are vocalizing how the “quiet quitting” trend is perpetuating misconceptions about their generation. Although the app popularized the buzzword this year, Gen Z creators are growing tired of the narrative that the phrase implies about their work efforts—and they’re even warning their followers against it now. The two-sided debate over “quiet quitting” revolves around it being a trendy form of laziness or a “push back against capitalism-gone-too-far.” Much of the coverage on TikTok frames “quiet quitting” as a new concept invented by less productive Gen Z workers compared to older gens, but TikTokers argue that this perception “unfairly demonizes Gen Z” and it’s in fact not a new concept. YPulse’s BIPOC newsletter covered how the concept is receiving push back from BIPOC workers as well. YPulse’s What’s Next for Work trend research shows that more Gen Z and Millennials are leaving jobs that cause burnout altogether in pursuit of more fulfilling opportunities.
