Millennial Latinx parents are breaking away from “chancla culture” and welcoming a softer approach to parenting. Millennial parents may go down in history as the ultimate helicopter parents, but this generation can be credited with changing parenting in other (and perhaps healthier) ways, too. Millennials have embraced gentle parenting, for instance, which champions “asking questions, exploring feelings and avoiding shame” and can be traced in part back to the rise of parenting advice on the internet and social media. In fact, after family and friends, social media is Millennial parents’ top source of parenting advice according to YPulse data, and between 2020 and 2021, the number of Millennial parents in the U.S. who sought advice online increased by +7pts. Now, this form of parenting (and the influencers behind its prevalence) are pushing Latinx parents to drop their cultures’ traditional parenting style—known as “la chancla”—which “emphasizes greater unquestioning obedience and respect for authority,” in favor of “gentle parenting.” Leading this movement are influencers such as parent coach and founder of Latinx Parenting Leslie Priscilla, who uses her 182K-strong Instagram platform to #EndChanclaCulture.
