Teens are shunning both college and work as they prepare for their futures. YPulse has been tracking the declining rate of college enrollment, and TikTok hashtags like “#NotGoingToCollege have racked up more than 30 million views” with more young users expressing interest in starting their own businesses or becoming an influencer instead. Because of the pandemic-induced trend of not continuing with higher ed, young adults are now showing “significant [signs of] apathy and disengagement…in thinking about their post-high school lives, the likely results of lingering trauma and isolation.” Experts are calling attention to this extreme form of professional “disengagement” among young adults, warning that their developmental skills will fall behind as more forgo college and building careers.
