Headspace has acquired Shine, a mental health app specifically for the BIPOC community. Shine, which has 45,000 paid subscribers and 6 million users, “tailors its content to marginalized communities including women and BIPOC people.” The app’s co-founders Marah Lidey and Naomi Hirabayashi are joining the Headspace leadership team to continue their work on growing inclusive mental health support. According to Lidey, “Black and Brown communities are often left behind in clinical research and mental health care itself…Our bodies, our skin color, our financial access, our past traumas—it all often felt otherized or not understood by predominantly white mental health professionals or basic mental health apps.” YPulse’s mental health survey shows that a third of BIPOC young people have downloaded a meditation / mindfulness app, and they’re more likely to have done so than their White/non-Hispanic peers.
