Depop is bringing secondhand clothing to the metaverse in a new partnership with The Sims. As young consumers spend more time in virtual world games, digital fashion is becoming nearly as important to young people as what they wear in real life, especially among Gen Z. In fact, our WE Metaverse trend report found that 39% of young Europeans are already shopping for digital products in web3 spaces, and digital fashion items are their top purchase. Now, brands from Gucci to Papa John’s (yes, the pizza place) have created virtual fashion collections—and Depop is jumping on board as one of the first secondhand sites to offer digital clothing. The collection was designed by top Depop sellers in the U.K., U.S. and Australia, and can be purchased with The Sims’ in-game currency. But beyond buying new ‘fits, players can also resell their outfits via a new Sims app called Trendi, where they will determine pricing and promote their listings, mirroring Depop’s IRL experience—and encouraging secondhand shopping in both the digital and physical realm.
