Triller tried to out-do TikTok with the largest capital commitment to Black creators—but the platform went back on their promises.

Triller tried to out-do TikTok with the largest capital commitment to Black creators—but the platform went back on their promises. Triller, a TikTok copycat, promised $14 million to Black creators, but less than a year later, Triller’s payments to many creators became erratic or nonexistent. Over the pandemic, Triller launched content creation houses in Hollywood Hills and even opened a partnership with the Sway Boys and “A-list TikTok stars were promised up to $10,000 per stream on TrillerTV” while the Black creators were promised $4K a month. One creator says of the experience, “This program was meant to make us financially free and to empower Black people…We were made to look like fools.” Triller took the opportunity during the Black TikTok strike against White creators not crediting the content of Black creators to attack their biggest app rival and now they’re reaping what they sowed. YPulse research shows 63% of Gen Z and Millennials say they don’t think brands have been doing enough to support #BlackLivesMatter and diverse initiatives.
