But, TikTok is planning on coming in hot with a music service of their own—potentially challenging Spotify and Apple Music.

Aug 02 2022

But, TikTok is planning on coming in hot with a music service of their own—potentially challenging Spotify and Apple Music. Music discovery and TikTok kind of go hand-in-hand these days. In fact, YPulse research shows the number of young consumers who use traditional media for music discovery has declined significantly since 2019 and 54% say TikTok is one of the top places they’re finding out about new artists and songs. Now, the app might be making their music focus even more official: “TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, filed a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for ‘TikTok Music’ in May” which would let users play, download, buy, and share music, as well as create playlists, comment on music, and livestream audio/video. ByteDance has already launched the app Resso in India, Brazil, and Indonesia, which has the same qualities filed in the TikTok Music patent. As of November 2021, Resso had 40 million users across the three countries and “Resso’s monthly active users grew by 304 percent between January 2021 to January 2022 in India alone, as opposed to Spotify’s 38 percent growth in the country during the same period of time.” (The Verge)
