We know video killed the radio star, but now the metaverse is killing the video star with MTV’s new Video Music Award nomination categories. As the metaverse becomes more ingrained in young people’s lives, virtual concerts are becoming a norm–even for some of Gen Z and Millennials’ favorite artists. This year’s VMAs are introducing the new “Best Metaverse Performance” category and the nominees include Ariana Grande, BLACKPINK, BTS, Charli XCX, Justin Bieber, and Twenty One Pilots. Ariana has been featured in Fortnite, BLACKPINK in PUBG, BTS in Minecraft, Justin Bieber on Wave, and both Charli XCX and Twenty One Pilots have been featured in Roblox concerts. Although many virtual concerts were a result of the pandemic, the new award category suggests live music experiences in the metaverse are, in fact, here to stay. YPulse’s Metaverse trend report data shows 74% of Gen Z and Millennials are interested in/have already attended a virtual concert. (Mashable)
