Netflix is launching several new mobile games—and one of them lets users experience life flashing before their eyes. Before Your Eyes “uses eye-tracking technology that progresses the story every time the camera detects that you’re blinking.” The game follows MC Benjamin Brynn, a man who has just died and is tasked by The Ferryman to transport souls to the afterlife. Netflix’s version allows players to see through Brynn’s memories when they utilize their mobile device’s camera to capture when the player blinks. Starting with his early childhood, players can blink, then move through other life moments. Given the recent news that Netflix lost nearly 1 million of their subscribers in the second quarter of 2022, they know they need to up their game (literally). This month, the streaming service released other games including Mahjong Solitaire and Into the Breach, “a tactical strategy game that challenges players to assemble a squad of pilots and mechs and participate in turn-based battles against an alien enemy.” YPulse data shows Netflix is the top service young people are watching weekly or more, but they are diving deeper into the gamification of entertainment to keep young viewers engaged.
