The Playboy Mansion and their virtual bunnies are setting up shop in the metaverse. The media icon is launching the MetaMansion, a virtual version of their notorious estate within The Sandbox platform. The MetaMansion will feature an assortment of activities including, “mini-games, social mixers, programmed events and ongoing digital collectible releases that draw upon the brand’s nearly 70-year history of publishing.” The Rabbitars (NFT rabbit avatars), based on the company’s logo, will “grant holders access to premium experiences in the virtual mansion.” After discontinuing their publications in March 2020, Playboy is planning on ramping up their online interest in crypto, collectible NFTs, and their new creators platform called Centerfold in order to establish a new virtual presence and revive the Playboy name. Gen Z and Millennials are not as privy to what the media company used to stand for, but what they do have is Y2K nostalgia and their interest in fashion/beauty trends from the era could attract them to the digital space.
