An army of frogs is taking over TikTok—but the environmental repercussions could be serious.

An army of frogs is taking over TikTok—but the environmental repercussions could be serious. TikTok’s #FrogArmy has amassed 483.8 million views and has sparked controversy among viewers and even environmental scientists. An account on the app called @thinfrog quickly gained popularity for his videos documenting a frog spawn collection of 1.4 million from a puddle that was drying up. By June, the user claimed many of the frogs began hatching and the number of frogs were beginning to get out of control, leading him to regret his “rescue” mission. Many users jumped on to post reactions to the army and @thinfrog’s mistake, and some have even written the whole bit off as conspiracy or fake. But environmentalists are chiming in after the virality of the content, warning that these efforts are actually harmful and a danger to “all the animals in the environment that they’re releasing them into – it’s creating a vector for disease and invasive species.” YPulse research shows climate change is a top social issue Gen Z and Millennials care about, and the backlash behind the #FrogArmy shows how passionate many are about environmental issues.
