A new wave of executives are attempting to diversify the book publishing industry to reach BIPOC young readers. While some BIPOC young creators are trying to do their part to make #BookTok more diverse and inclusive, BIPOC executives who work in book publishing are using their power to diversify the industry itself. For generations, major publishers in the U.S. have “focused almost entirely on White readers.” But during the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, more publishers hired editors of color into senior positions. In the wake of this shift, BIPOC publishing execs like Dana Canedy of Simon & Schuster, Lisa Lucas at Pantheon, Thomas Gebremedhin of Doubleday, Nadxieli Nieto of Flatiron, and Jamia Wilson of Random House have been acquiring books by BIPOC and Black authors.
