Menstrual tracking apps are trying to make their users’ data anonymous following the overturn of Roe v Wade.

Jun 27 2022

Menstrual tracking apps are trying to make their users’ data anonymous following the overturn of Roe v Wade. Many young women use apps like Flo, Clue, and Apple’s Health app to help them keep a log of their periods, when they’re fertile, ovulating, and when their chances of pregnancy are high or low. Natural Cycles, the first menstrual app to be approved by the FDA, is taking measures to ensure the data of their users is kept private and anonymous and the Flo app announced they are creating an “Anonymous Mode” where users will have the ability to remove their personal information in their account. Health apps “typically don’t fall under the protections from HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act” and even before the Supreme Court decision, “menstrual data has been used in government investigations.” Users are being urged to check the company’s privacy policies to see who has access to their data. YPulse’s The Privacy Issue trend report shows young people are feeling more vulnerable/concerned about their privacy than ever and 86% of 13-39-year-olds believe tech companies need to be more transparent about what they use user data for.
