BIPOC creators are making the #BookTok community more diverse and inclusive. #BookTok is perhaps one of the biggest subcultures on TikTok, but according to BIPOC creators, the algorithm “tends to favor White people over creators of color,” and most search results feature mostly White creators, and books written by White authors. But more BIPOC creators on the app are trying to showcase books written by diverse authors. Bernie Julia (@berniejulia) is using her channel to share her love of postmodern, Black, and Afrofuturism; Kendra Keeter-Gray (@kendra.reads) showcases books written by women of color and engages with BIPOC, disabled, and LGBTQ+ creators; and Azanta Thakur (@azantareads) supports Muslim authors on her account. According to Julia: “There are a ton of amazing BookTok creators of color on the app. We may not have 50,000 followers each, but we’re here.” (Elle)
