HBO Max’s adult animated show Velma, executive produced and voiced by Mindy Kaling, will feature the Scooby-Doo character as South Asian. Young people tell us they want iconic characters to be recast with BIPOC actors, and more of them have been calling out TV shows and movies for casting White actors to voice BIPOC animated characters. During Warner Bros. Discovery’s recent upfront presentation, Mindy Kaling unveiled a first look of her and HBO Max’s upcoming adult animated mystery series, which features the brainy and spunky, glasses-wearing character from the Scooby-Doo gang as Brown and South Asian. “Hopefully you noticed my Velma is South Asian,” Kaling said during the presentation. “If people freak out about that, I don’t care.” She added: “Nobody ever complained about a talking dog solving mysteries. So I don’t think they’ll be upset over a [B]rown Velma.” (NBC News)
