#GutHealth and #HealYourGut is trending on TikTok, but the alternative health implications are potentially toxic. Gut health influencers are targeting young girls on TikTok (#GutHealth has over 1.6 billion views) but some are saying it’s just another ploy to enforce a toxic diet culture among women. Creators on the app are fueling users’ health anxiety with videos on “How I Healed My Gut” that vilify common (and normal) bodily processes like bouts of acne and stomach bloating. The underlying theme behind most of the content is a negative experience with a doctor who didn’t listen, followed by a dramatically changed diet that fixed whatever the issue was. Nutritionists are responding to the trend by warning young people to visit their doctor before making any major changes to their diet. We’ve seen this before with cleansing/detox teas, and YPulse’s Cooking and Diets Report shows 19% of 13-39-year-olds and 23% of Millennial females say that when deciding what to eat, they consider the effect on their gut health.
