After BIPOC and Black users spoke out about not receiving credit for creating viral dance trends, TikTok added tools to make it easier to credit original creators.

After BIPOC and Black users spoke out about not receiving credit for creating viral dance trends, TikTok added tools to make it easier to credit original creators. We told you that Black creators on TikTok were protesting last summer after not being properly credited for creating dance moves for trends—and since then, brands like Logitech stepped up to help them start the copyright process. Now, TikTok is finally adding tools to make it easier for users to directly tag and credit original videos and creators of a specific trend on their own content. The credited video will appear as a mention in the caption of a newly uploaded TikTok video, which will allow followers to view the tagged video. According to TikTok’s Director of the Creator Community: “It’s important to see a culture of credit take shape across the digital landscape and to support underrepresented creators in being properly credited and celebrated for their work.” YPulse’s New Content Creators trend research found that 77% of BIPOC young consumers would be excited for a brand to repost their content on their own social channel as long as it’s credited.
