Meta is testing new avatar reactions in Instagram Stories. The brand has been pushing the use of digital avatars, especially in their VR platforms, but they want avatars to be “a more prominent extension of [users’] personality and presence” beyond virtual worlds. Instagram users are now being presented with the option to use either emoji or avatar reactions to Stories. When choosing the avatar option, they’ll be directed to create their unique character (if they don’t have one already) where a range of custom reactions and facial expressions are available. For now, dressing avatars is free, however, similar to Bitmoji and Snapchat, this will open the opportunity for Meta to collab with fashion brands and “sell virtual items within its evolving spaces.” We know a reported $54 billion was spent on virtual goods in 2021 and our Metaverse Trend Report found 84% of Gen Z and Millennials have purchased clothing / accessories for their avatar.
