Twitter’s new “misinformation policy” is pledging to hide tweets that share false information during a crisis. YPulse’s Social Media Behavior Report found that 76% of young social media users agree that “platforms have a responsibility to prevent the spread of false information / fake news.” Recognizing the issue of the mass spread of misinformation during chaotic or critical events as users rush to share info, Twitter’s new policy will add a warning to tweets that are categorized as misinformation that must be clicked before the tweet is revealed, similar to how graphic imagery is displayed now. Those tweets will also be blocked from being promoted via the algorithm. The moderation of tweets and censorship is a delicate topic among social media platforms, and comes at a specially interesting time as Elon Musk’s purchase of the company is in limbo and his intentions to limit cautions like this are up in the air.
