Millennial parents are parenting differently than their Boomer parents, allowing their kids to be more emotional. When it comes to Millennial parenting, common themes are starting to emerge regarding letting their kids “feel their feelings” and express emotions—a technique many Millennial parents felt their own parents missed the mark on when they were growing up. One Millennial parent explains that when she lets her kid’s emotions rule and lets them throw a tantrum before bedtime, she sees it as an important step in her “parent journey,” whereas Boomer parents would’ve seen it as an “inconvenience that would result in a screaming match.” According to one pediatrician, there has been a shift of Millennial parents attempting to take the time to understand why their child feels angry, sad, disappointed, happy, or scared. Millennials have faced more anxiety and been diagnosed more than previous gens, and Millennial parents want to put that focus on mental health into how they teach their own children about emotions.
