Latina tech workers are getting on TikTok to help their peers navigate the White- and male-dominated industry. According to a Built In survey, only 26% of women across all races and ethnicities have computer-related jobs in the tech field—and the disparity is even worse among Hispanic women, who make up only 2% of the industry. Now, some Latina tech workers are taking to TikTok to connect with young Latinas aspiring to work in the tech industry by sharing their experiences, dispelling misconceptions, and offering advice. Popular TikTokers include Maribel Campos, who works at Apple; Gina Morena, who works for Microsoft; and Michelle Villagran, who works for Westlands Management Solutions. While some of the most popular TikTok videos about tech describe six-figure salaries and other benefits that come with coding positions, Villagran’s, Campos’, and Moreno’s videos tend to show “a different side” of the industry by highlighting the positions in the industry that don’t necessarily require coding skills but still pay attractive salaries. They also share resume and internship advice and offer a “stark look at some of the negative aspects of the industry,” which is usually glamorized in media and pop culture. (NBC News)
